How the GI Joe Movie Came to Be

by Dave

GI Joe action figures, cartoons, and comic books are parts of every young boy’s childhood who grew up in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The young boys back then idolized the Joes who constantly fought against evil forces.

If you are also a GI Joe fan, you have probably heard about the new GI Joe movie. Maybe you have even watched it already because it has already premiered in Tokyo, Japan. The event was attended by the movie’s cast.

The GI Joe movie was developed by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, a film producer and a former CEO of Warner Bros., and by Brian Goldner, the CEO of Hasbro. Hasbro is the toy company which created the famous GI Joe action figures. Bonaventura thought of producing a film featuring high technology military equipments and Goldner recommended his GI Joe characters for the film. This is not the first time that the two worked together. After they agreed to use Hasbro’s GI Joe toy line, they selected Michale B. Gordon, the screenwriter for the movie 300, to write the script for the movie.

There is a new character in the new GI Joe movie which is not included in the cartoons and comic books. Hasbro gave the name Rex to the new character. Bonaventura was the one who decided to have a new character because he wanted the movie to trace the origins of some of the Joes, especially Duke.

This all happened in 2003 and after six years in the making, the movie was finally be released on August 7, 2009.

GI Joe costumes are anything but traditional for the new live action movie. The characters in the movie do not look like regular soldiers. They look more like special cops. For the new movie, GI Joe costumes are all black – not just typical black uniforms but skin tight black overalls.
